  2. The results of the experiment 
  3. shown in the previous diagram 
  4. are plotted in degrees, against 
  5. the distance the electrode had 
  6. traveled. (Because the electrode 
  7. was so slanted that it was 
  8. almost parallel to the cortical 
  9. surface, the track distance is 
  10. almost the same as the distance 
  11. along the surface.) In this 
  12. experiment 180 degrees, a full 
  13. rotation, corresponded to about 
  14. 0.7 millimeter.

  16.     In such penetrations, the 
  17. direction of orientation shifts 
  18. may be clockwise or 
  19. counterclockwise, and most 
  20. penetrations, if long enough, 
  21. sooner or later show shifts in 
  22. the direction of rotation; these 
  23. occur at unpredictable 
  24. intervals of a few millimeters. 
  25. The graph to the left shows an 
  26. example of a sequence with 
  27. several such reversals.
